Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country built for road trips. It is a land where every turn reveals a new vista- a turquoise river, a medieval fortress perched on a cliff, or a timeless village nestled in a green valley. The freedom of having your own vehicle is the only way to truly connect with its raw beauty and captivating history.
This 7-day itinerary is a comprehensive loop that starts and ends in Sarajevo. It is designed to give you a deep and unforgettable taste of the country’s diverse landscapes and cultures. So, buckle up and let’s begin the adventure.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploration in Sarajevo
Your journey begins in Sarajevo, the resilient and vibrant capital. After picking up your rental van, settle into your accommodation. Spend the afternoon getting lost in the cobbled streets of Baščaršija, the city’s old Ottoman bazaar. Listen to the hammers of coppersmiths, breathe in the smell of fresh ćevapi, and drink from the Sebilj fountain- legend says it ensures your return to Sarajevo. Enjoy a traditional Bosnian dinner to prepare for the week ahead.
Day 2: Sarajevo’s Echoes of History
Today is about understanding the city’s complex past. In the morning, drive to the outskirts to visit the Tunnel of Hope, a moving tribute to the city’s endurance during the 1990s siege. In the afternoon, return to the city center to visit the War Childhood Museum for a powerful and personal perspective on the conflict. Later, take a drive up Trebević Mountain to see the abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track, now a unique canvas for street art, and enjoy panoramic views of the city below.
Day 3: The Scenic Road to Mostar
The drive from Sarajevo to Mostar is one of Europe’s most beautiful. The road follows the turquoise Neretva River as it carves through dramatic canyons. Make a stop in Konjic to see its beautifully reconstructed Ottoman bridge. A bit further south, stop in Jablanica to see the destroyed railway bridge over the Neretva, a powerful monument from a famous World War II battle. Arrive in Mostar in the late afternoon, just as the golden light illuminates the city.
Day 4: The Jewels of Herzegovina
Dedicate today to Mostar and its surroundings. Start your morning early at Stari Most, the iconic Old Bridge, to watch it gleam before the crowds arrive. Just a short drive away is Blagaj, where a 16th-century Dervish monastery is stunningly built into a cliff face at the source of the Buna River. Afterwards, visit the medieval walled town of Počitelj, a UNESCO site that feels like stepping back in time. Return to Mostar for an evening stroll.
Day 5: Journey to the Royal Cities
Leave Herzegovina behind and drive north into the heart of Central Bosnia. Your destination is Jajce, the last capital of the medieval Bosnian kingdom. Before you arrive, make a stop in Travnik, a well-preserved Ottoman town that was once the seat of viziers. Once in Jajce, you will be greeted by a spectacular sight- a massive waterfall right in the center of town. Explore the hilltop fortress and the ancient catacombs.
Day 6: Pliva Lakes and Banja Luka’s Charm
Spend the morning just outside Jajce at the serene Pliva Lakes. Here you can see the famous collection of small medieval watermills huddled together on the water. After enjoying the tranquility, take the scenic drive north to Banja Luka, the country’s second-largest city. Settle in and take a walk along the Vrbas River or visit the impressive Kastel Fortress, a testament to the city’s long history.
Day 7: A Relaxed Return to Sarajevo
Enjoy a final Bosnian coffee in Banja Luka before beginning the relaxed drive back to Sarajevo. The journey takes you through a different, yet equally beautiful, part of the country’s landscape. Depending on your flight schedule, you can either drive directly to the airport or spend one last evening in the capital, reflecting on an incredible week.
