The Essentials: Rules of the Road
BiH follows standard continental European driving rules.
- Drive on the Right: Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road and overtakes on the left.
- Speed Limits: Unless otherwise posted, general speed limits are:
- 50 km/h in built-up areas.
- 80 km/h on open roads.
- 130 km/h on motorways (autocesta). Always look for posted signs as limits can change frequently.
- Headlights: Dipped headlights are mandatory at all times, day and night, 24/7.
- Alcohol: There is a near-zero tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol. The legal limit is very low (0.03%), so the only safe rule is: do not drink and drive.
- Seatbelts: Mandatory for all passengers, in both front and back seats.
- Mobile Phones: Using a mobile phone while driving is strictly prohibited, unless you are using a hands-free system.
Road Conditions & Scenery
The road network in BiH is constantly improving.
- Motorways (A1): The main motorway connecting Sarajevo with Zenica and heading south towards Mostar is modern and in excellent condition. A toll is required for usage, which can be paid in cash (BAM or EUR) or by card.
- Main Roads (Magistralni putevi): These “M” roads are the main arteries connecting cities. They are generally well-paved and maintained but are typically single-lane highways that pass through towns and villages, so expect your average speed to be lower.
- Mountain Roads: Many of the most scenic routes are two-lane mountain roads. They can be narrow and winding. Drive defensively, do not rush, and be prepared to be amazed by the stunning views. Honk gently before blind corners to alert oncoming traffic.
Documentation & Requirements
- Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license from your home country is required.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): An IDP is not legally required if your license is in the Latin alphabet. However, it can be helpful as it provides a translation.
